Support Weavers Around the World

In Pirot, Serbia there is an exquisite tradition of weaving that has been carried forth for generations.  But what once was a thriving craft practiced by 5,000 weavers only a century ago, remains only 10 weavers striving to keep the tradition alive today.

Weaving is a painstaking work. It requires geometrical precision, supreme skill and creativity in equal measure. Everything is done by hand only, and in the same way as hundreds of years ago. It takes two weavers working simultaneously a month to create less than one square meter.

Pirot carpets, with their mystical allure, represent ancient symbols which carry magical meanings and can be read as an alphabet.  There are 95 varieties that weavers have to memorize, from which they tell stories - woven into their carpets.
